Portland cement is manufactured through blending a mixture of materials containing lime and
clay. The primary components are lime, silica, aluminum oxide and iron oxide. The materials are ground and fed into a rotary kiln. The kiln is maintained at a temperature of 2700oF. A chemical reaction occurs in the kiln which forms pellets of a material called clinker. The clinker is cooled and ground to a power consistancy. A retarder such as gypsum is added during this process which controls the rate of set under hydration. The cement is then typically stored in silos ready for shipment. |
